About each tool

Adobe Premiere Pro

Adobe's video editor with AI tools such as Generative Extend and Object Mask. The individual plan is $22.99 a month, annual plan billed monthly.

Who it is for

Adobe sells it to individuals (single-app or Creative Cloud Pro), students and teachers (a discounted Creative Cloud Pro plan with eligibility checks) and business teams (per-license plans with an Admin Console). The free mobile app is positioned as a standalone social video editor, separate from the paid desktop plans.

Strengths

  • Adobe lists Generative Extend (lengthens clips with added frames or ambient sound), Object Mask, Media Intelligence search by plain-language description, Text-Based Editing from a transcript, Enhance Speech, Auto Color, Auto Reframe and Auto Ducking.
  • Adobe says Speech to Text produces transcripts in over 18 languages with speaker detection, and that captions can be translated into 27 languages.
  • Adobe lists the individual Premiere plan at 100GB storage plus Frame.io, an Adobe Express Premium plan, 20,000+ fonts and 1 million+ free assets; the business Premiere plan lists 1TB storage, an Admin Console and 180-day version histories.
  • Adobe's help pages say Creative Cloud Pro includes unlimited standard generative generations plus 4,000 monthly credits for premium generations.
  • Adobe states it does not train on Creative Cloud subscribers' personal content, and that its current Firefly models were trained on licensed content such as Adobe Stock and public domain content.
  • Adobe's trial page offers a 7-day free trial of the full app for desktop, web and mobile, with no charge until the trial ends.

Limitations

  • Adobe's help pages list 25 monthly generative credits for single-app plans started on or after June 17, 2025 (500 for earlier subscribers). Credits reset monthly and do not roll over, and extra credits cost more.
  • Generative Extend is a premium feature that Adobe meters per second of output. The Generative Credits FAQ lists 100 credits a second at 1080p/24 fps and 125 at 1080p/30 fps, so 25 credits cover a fraction of one second of 1080p.
  • Every plan on Adobe's US plans page is billed as annual, billed monthly. On that plan, Adobe's US terms say canceling after 14 days brings an early termination fee of 50% of the remaining contract balance, and prepaid annual plans are not refundable if canceled before the year ends.
  • Creative Cloud Pro is shown at $34.99 a month for the first 3 months for new subscribers (regularly $69.99), and the student and teacher price of $19.99 a month is for the first year. Adobe's page does not state the price after those periods other than the regular $69.99.

DaVinci Resolve

Video editing, color, effects and audio software for Mac, Windows and Linux. A free version is available; the Studio version is listed at $295 and adds Neural Engine AI tools.

Who it is for

Editors, colourists and post-production teams working on video projects. Blackmagic lists multi-user collaboration for several people working on the same project at once.

Strengths

  • A free version is available for Mac, Windows and Linux
  • The free version supports Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) up to 60 fps
  • The free version includes multi-user collaboration on the same project
  • Studio is listed at $295 and adds the DaVinci Neural Engine, more Resolve FX and Fairlight FX plug-ins, stereoscopic tools and advanced HDR grading

Limitations

  • The free version is limited to Ultra HD and 60 fps; Studio goes up to 32K and 120 fps
  • Neural Engine AI features, such as AI noise reduction and Magic Mask, are listed under Studio and not the free version
  • Some tools need specific hardware; for example, Blackmagic lists Voice Convert as needing a GPU with 8 GB of video memory
  • The iPad version has fewer features than the desktop version, and Studio on iPad is an in-app purchase
