Burp Suite vs XBOW

Burp Suite and XBOW side by side: what each one is, what it costs to start, and whether you can try it free. Everything below comes from the vendors' own sites and other public sources, not from hands-on testing.

Neither tool is ranked above the other here. These are research-based profiles, not hands-on tests. Starting price is the lowest listed paid plan per month (annual-billing equivalent where the vendor lists one), as shown on the vendor's own site when we last checked. Prices change, so confirm on the vendor's site. How this site works.

Both are in our Cybersecurity AI category.

About each tool

Burp Suite

Web security testing toolkit; Community is free, Professional (with AI features needing credits) is $499 per user on a one-year basis (reported); DAST pricing is not published.

Who it is for

PortSwigger lists Professional for individual users such as penetration testers, bug bounty hunters and AppSec engineers, and DAST for organizations with no limit on users per license. Community Edition is described as the manual tools to start web security testing.

Strengths

  • PortSwigger lists Burp AI features in Professional: custom prompts in Repeater, an Explainer for highlighted messages, Explore Issue for scanner findings, false-positive filtering for broken access control checks, and AI-generated recorded logins.
  • The vendor says Burp AI features do not run unless you activate them, and Professional users can turn them all off under Settings > AI (DAST administrators have a separate toggle).
  • PortSwigger's data-handling page says its contracts bar the AI providers (OpenAI and Anthropic models) from monitoring, storing or training on your data, and that its AI is covered by its ISO 27001 certification and Data Processing Agreement.
  • Burp Suite DAST is listed with a Chromium-based crawler, API scanning (OpenAPI, SOAP, GraphQL, Postman), role-based access control, SAML SSO, and CI/CD integrations including Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI and Azure DevOps.
  • Burp AT, a separate agentic AI feature, is in public beta; the vendor says scope and approval rules are enforced by Burp's tooling layer, with Manual, Smart and Autonomous modes and activity logged in the project.
  • A free trial of Professional is offered, and Community Edition is a free download with a proxy, Repeater, Decoder, Sequencer, Comparer and a demo version of Intruder.

Limitations

  • Burp AI needs AI credits, deducted per use and bought from My Account (a Burp AI subscription for teams is also offered); the pages read show no credit prices, credits expire 12 months after purchase, belong to one user and cannot be pooled, and AI features stop when they run out.
  • PortSwigger says Burp AI does not automatically redact sensitive data (except in AI recorded logins), has no fixed deletion schedule for conversation and audit data, may use anonymized data to improve its AI features, and processes data on AWS in US-East and EU-West with no region choice.
  • Burp AT requires Professional 2026.7 or later plus AI credits, is in public beta with no stated general availability date, and its pricing was not found; DAST pricing is not published and is quoted by contacting PortSwigger.
  • The vendor's pages disagree on terms: the pricing page lists no prices, the Professional page shows $499 without a billing basis, the licensing page says subscriptions are annual, and the buy and FAQ pages mention 1 to 5 year (and 10 year) terms with prepayment.

XBOW

Autonomous AI pentesting platform for web apps and APIs that returns exploit-validated findings with remediation steps; pricing is not published (request a quote).

Who it is for

Security, audit and compliance teams that want continuous application testing instead of a point-in-time annual pentest; the vendor says coverage can range from a single application to thousands. The vendor describes it as a platform sold on a scoped, usage basis, so it is aimed at organizations that will talk to sales rather than self-serve buyers.

Strengths

  • XBOW says each finding is proven with a working exploit and a reproducible trace, with independent validators confirming it, and reports include evidence, severity and remediation.
  • The platform page lists controls for scope, impact level (off, moderate or deep), rate limits, testing windows, a one-session-at-a-time mode, optional human approval for the first run, and pause at any time.
  • The platform page lists Jira and GitHub issues as ticketing targets and an API to launch assessments from release pipelines; the docs list Jira, Microsoft Sentinel and Security Copilot integrations.
  • XBOW's docs say attack commands are checked by a separate AI model acting as a safety judge plus deterministic rules, and that exploits are demonstrated in known-benign ways.
  • XBOW says it retests a fix after deployment and confirms whether the issue is closed.
  • The pricing page says it is sold through AWS, Google, Oracle and Microsoft marketplaces so spend can use existing committed agreements.

Limitations

  • The pricing page lists no plans or amounts: pricing is described as usage-based and scoped to your environment, with a Request a Quote button and a demo page.
  • A November 2025 release and vendor blog give a Pentest On-Demand starting price of $6,000, but the blog now carries an editor's note that Lightspeed (the name in its title) was deprecated as of 2026-07-16 and to contact sales, so that figure may no longer be available.
  • No free plan or free trial is mentioned on the pricing page.
  • XBOW's trust documentation says the platform is hosted on AWS in the United States, with other residency options in private preview, and that retention follows a Data Management Policy that was not read, so specific retention periods are unconfirmed.
  • The platform page says it routes tasks across multiple models but names none, and says some vulnerability classes are in preview rather than generally available.
