Malwarebytes and Norton Genie side by side: what each one is, what it costs to start, and whether you can try it free. Everything below comes from the vendors' own sites and other public sources, not from hands-on testing.

Neither tool is ranked above the other here. These are research-based profiles, not hands-on tests. Starting price is the lowest listed paid plan per month (annual-billing equivalent where the vendor lists one), as shown on the vendor's own site when we last checked. About each tool

Malwarebytes

Consumer antivirus and scam protection; the vendor says AI is core to its products. A free cleanup tool and 14-day trial exist; Premium prices are not published on readable pages.

Who it is for

Individuals and families who want antivirus and scam checking on PCs, Macs, phones and tablets. The vendor also sells separate multi-device tiers on its pricing pages and a Teams offering for small businesses.

Strengths

  • The vendor lists Premium Security features in four groups: scam safety (Scam Guard, Trusted Advisor, Digital Footprint scanner, Text Protection on Android and iOS, Call Protection on iOS), threat protection (web, malware and PUP, ransomware), privacy (Privacy VPN, webcam and remote desktop monitoring) and system tools.
  • The vendor's AI Hub says its 'AI-fueled defense paired with human expertise' is core to Premium Security, Mobile Security and Browser Guard, and describes Scam Guard as an AI chat companion that also works as @Malwarebytes inside ChatGPT.
  • A Malwarebytes help article says Scam Guard removes personal details from submitted items, extracts links, phone numbers and emails and checks them against Malwarebytes' protection databases; chat messages and screenshots are stored for up to two hours and then deleted.
  • The vendor lists a free download, a 14-day Premium Security trial, and a 60-day money-back guarantee (the for-home page says on annual plans).
  • The vendor says Premium real-time protection uses behavioral analysis, and lists free tools such as Scam Guard and Browser Guard on its home page.

Limitations

  • The vendor describes the free version as an on-demand cleanup tool without real-time protection; real-time, ransomware and exploit protection are in paid Premium.
  • Identity Theft Protection and Personal Data Remover are billed annually, and the vendor says personal data removal and the $1M/$2M insurance plans are US-specific; insurance does not cover incidents before purchase and enrollment.
  • The privacy policy lists collection of detections, system details, usage logs and exploit-block data, says retention periods vary and are not fixed, and says it does not sell data. It does not mention AI or model training, and the Scam Guard article read does not say whether chats train models.

Norton Genie

Norton's AI scam-checking assistant; Norton says it is free. Norton plans with Scam Protection start at $23.99 for the first year, then $59.99 a year.

Who it is for

Consumers who want a second opinion on a suspicious text, email, website or YouTube video. Norton's FAQ says Genie is not a replacement for anti-phishing software, since it focuses on detection and response after a message has reached you.

Strengths

  • Norton's FAQ says Genie is free at Genie.Norton.com or through the App Store or Google Play; the App Store lists the iOS app as Free with no in-app purchases listed.
  • Norton says Genie checks texts, emails, websites and social posts, explains what the scammer is likely trying to do, and suggests next steps; the App Store says you can paste text or upload screenshots and ask follow-up questions.
  • Norton's support pages list Genie on Windows, Mac, Android and iOS inside Scam Protection, and the FAQ lists the web version for Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox.
  • Norton's deepfake support page says you can paste a public YouTube link into Genie's Ask Genie field and it reports whether the video appears to be a deepfake scam, with a summary.
  • A Norton blog post dated February 24, 2026 says a Norton app inside ChatGPT, powered by Genie, lets you tag @Norton in a chat to check messages, links and images.

Limitations

  • Norton's FAQ says Genie is in an early access phase, may not always decide whether a message is a scam, and then gives next steps instead. Norton's pages say no one can prevent all cybercrime, and no accuracy or detection-rate figures are given.
  • Data handling is thinly stated: Norton's support page says Genie chat history is deleted automatically after 30 days and can be turned on or off in settings. Norton's pages do not say whether submitted content is used for AI training; the FAQ says usage helps Genie improve. The App Store lists Diagnostics data, not linked to you.
