About each tool

Paperpal

AI writing, citation and plagiarism-check tool for academic papers. Free plan available; Prime is $144 a year billed annually (about $12 a month), or $25 monthly.

Who it is for

Paperpal's Help Center describes Prime as for regular research and writing needs and Pro as for high-stakes work such as journal articles, theses and clinical documents. Its pricing page also mentions institution and enterprise plans on request.

Strengths

  • Paperpal's pricing page lists tools for grammar checking, paraphrasing, plagiarism checking, citation generation, translation, Chat PDF and a journal submission checker, and says its Chrome extension supports Google Docs and Overleaf.
  • A Paperpal blog post lists translation in 30+ languages, citations in 10,000+ styles, and pre-submission checks covering 30+ language and technical points.
  • Paperpal's blog says it does not use customer data to train its AI models, that users own the copyright to content produced with it, and that it holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification (Reported; a blog post, not a policy page).
  • Paperpal's Help Center lists plagiarism-check allowances of 7,000 words a month on Free, 10,000 on Prime and 30,000 on Pro, with full reports on Prime and Pro and a standard report on Free.
  • The Help Center says you can cancel any time from the Membership & Billing page and that access continues until the plan expires.
  • Paperpal's pricing page says it bills in local currencies and offers institution and enterprise plans with shared libraries.

Limitations

  • The free plan is capped: 200 language corrections a month, generative AI features up to 5 uses a day, and plagiarism checks up to 7,000 words a month (Reported from a Paperpal blog post).
  • A Help Center article says the updated Prime plan has monthly limits (20k edits, 500 uses of Rewrite, Translate, AI Review and similar tools, 500 Research Q&A, 25k words of AI detection) while older "Prime Classic" subscribers keep unlimited use. Paperpal's blog posts still describe Prime as unlimited, so current Prime limits are unclear.
  • Plagiarism checks are metered monthly (10,000 words on Prime, 30,000 on Pro). Extra checks need one-time packs of 10,000 words that stay valid for 30 days and are shared with Reference Checks.
  • Paperpal's own pages disagree on the annual Prime price: the Help Center says $144 a year, while blog posts say $139. One blog post lists a $55 quarterly option; another does not mention it.

Grammarly

Writing assistant that checks grammar, spelling, tone and clarity and suggests rewrites in a desktop app, browser extensions, mobile apps and integrations.

Who it is for

Individuals and teams who write in email, documents, chat and on the web and want automated writing suggestions. Pro adds team features such as style guides, brand tones and analytics, and Enterprise adds admin and security controls.

Strengths

  • Free plan at $0 with 100 AI prompts per month
  • Listed integrations include Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Gmail, Outlook, Slack, Salesforce, PowerPoint, LinkedIn, Microsoft Teams, Google Sheets, Zendesk and Jira
  • Desktop apps for Windows and Mac, browser extensions for Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge, an Office add-in, and iPhone, iPad and Android apps
  • Writing support in more than 20 languages
  • Enterprise adds SAML SSO, SCIM, BYOK encryption and data loss prevention

Limitations

  • The free plan has no tone adjustment, full-sentence rewrites, plagiarism or AI-text detection, or team and security features
  • Pro lists 1 style guide, 1 brand tone and 2 user groups; unlimited of each are listed under Enterprise
  • Enterprise has no public price (contact sales)
  • Grammarly says Pro is being rolled out gradually and is not yet available to every customer type, for example Business and Education customers
