What is Paperpal?

Paperpal is an AI writing assistant for academic and research text. It offers language edits, AI rewriting, translation, citation and Chat PDF tools, plagiarism checks and journal-submission checks, and runs in a web editor, an MS Word add-in and Chrome and Edge extensions that cover Google Docs and Overleaf.

Who it's for

Paperpal's Help Center describes Prime as for regular research and writing needs and Pro as for high-stakes work such as journal articles, theses and clinical documents. Its pricing page also mentions institution and enterprise plans on request.

Pros & cons

Strengths

  • Paperpal's pricing page lists tools for grammar checking, paraphrasing, plagiarism checking, citation generation, translation, Chat PDF and a journal submission checker, and says its Chrome extension supports Google Docs and Overleaf.
  • A Paperpal blog post lists translation in 30+ languages, citations in 10,000+ styles, and pre-submission checks covering 30+ language and technical points.
  • Paperpal's blog says it does not use customer data to train its AI models, that users own the copyright to content produced with it, and that it holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification (Reported; a blog post, not a policy page).
  • Paperpal's Help Center lists plagiarism-check allowances of 7,000 words a month on Free, 10,000 on Prime and 30,000 on Pro, with full reports on Prime and Pro and a standard report on Free.
  • The Help Center says you can cancel any time from the Membership & Billing page and that access continues until the plan expires.
  • Paperpal's pricing page says it bills in local currencies and offers institution and enterprise plans with shared libraries.

Limitations

  • The free plan is capped: 200 language corrections a month, generative AI features up to 5 uses a day, and plagiarism checks up to 7,000 words a month (Reported from a Paperpal blog post).
  • A Help Center article says the updated Prime plan has monthly limits (20k edits, 500 uses of Rewrite, Translate, AI Review and similar tools, 500 Research Q&A, 25k words of AI detection) while older "Prime Classic" subscribers keep unlimited use. Paperpal's blog posts still describe Prime as unlimited, so current Prime limits are unclear.
  • Plagiarism checks are metered monthly (10,000 words on Prime, 30,000 on Pro). Extra checks need one-time packs of 10,000 words that stay valid for 30 days and are shared with Reference Checks.
  • Paperpal's own pages disagree on the annual Prime price: the Help Center says $144 a year, while blog posts say $139. One blog post lists a $55 quarterly option; another does not mention it.
  • Refunds apply only to first-time purchases: 30 days for annual plans and 7 days for monthly plans. Users in Japan paying the annual plan through an institution cannot cancel or get a refund.

Plans and pricing

  • Free: $0. 200 language corrections a month, generative AI features up to 5 uses a day, plagiarism check up to 7,000 words a month with a standard report (Reported).
  • Prime: $144 a year billed annually (about $12 a month), or $25 monthly. Plagiarism check up to 10,000 words a month with a full report. Language and AI limits are unclear: older Prime Classic plans are unlimited, updated Prime has monthly caps. A $55 quarterly option is also reported.
  • Pro: $348 a year billed annually (about $29 a month), or $59 monthly. Plagiarism check up to 30,000 words a month with a full report. A Help Center article says Pro has unlimited grammar and language edits, unlimited AI detection and a larger Library.
  • Teams: From $107 for 2-5 members (Reported). From a Paperpal blog post only; billing period and contents not confirmed.
  • Institutional: Custom. Pricing page offers institution and enterprise plans with shared libraries; contact Paperpal.

Prime and Pro prices were read from Paperpal's Help Center; the official pricing page loaded but showed no plan prices or limits, and its FAQ answers were blank. Free-plan limits and Teams pricing come from blog posts and are Reported. Prices are in US dollars, though Paperpal says it bills in local currencies. Confirm on the live pricing page.
