Semgrep vs GitGuardian

Semgrep and GitGuardian side by side: what each one is, what it costs to start, and whether you can try it free. Everything below comes from the vendors' own sites and other public sources, not from hands-on testing.

Neither tool is ranked above the other here. These are research-based profiles, not hands-on tests. Starting price is the lowest listed paid plan per month (annual-billing equivalent where the vendor lists one), as shown on the vendor's own site when we last checked. Prices change, so confirm on the vendor's site. How this site works.

Key differences

Both list a free tier, so you can try each before paying.

Pricing is not directly comparable from the numbers we hold (Semgrep: Free; paid plans from $30/mo; GitGuardian: Free; custom-priced paid plans), so check each vendor's pricing page.

Both are in our Cybersecurity AI category.

About each tool

Semgrep

Code, dependency and secrets scanning with AI triage and autofix on credits. Free for up to 10 contributors; Teams from $30 a month per contributor, billed monthly.

Who it is for

Development and security teams that want code, dependency and secrets scanning in CI or on pull requests. Semgrep offers a Free Edition for organizations with up to 10 contributors, Teams for larger groups, and Enterprise for self-managed source control, custom CI/CD and dedicated support.

Strengths

  • Semgrep lists Code (SAST) and Supply Chain (SCA) at $0 per contributor on the Free Edition, with community support and unlimited public repositories.
  • Semgrep's docs list the products as Code, Supply Chain and Secrets, and say the platform integrates with GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps.
  • Semgrep says AI pull request comments cost 0 credits and AI analysis (triage, remediation guidance, component tagging) costs 1 credit per finding.
  • Semgrep's docs say its AI providers (default OpenAI, Amazon Bedrock and Cloudflare Workers AI) run under zero data retention agreements and do not use customer data to train their models.
  • Semgrep's docs say customers can enroll in a minimal data retention policy through Support, and can request deletion of account data through Support.
  • Semgrep's docs say Team and Enterprise customers can buy extra AI credits in 10,000-credit increments, and that bring-your-own-key options exist for some AI features (not for AI-powered detection scans).

Limitations

  • Teams is priced per contributor and per product (Code $30, Supply Chain $30, Secrets $15 a month); Enterprise pricing is custom, and a contributor is anyone with a commit to a scanned private repository in the past 90 days.
  • AI features use credits: 60 on Free (60 per month per the docs), 20 per contributor a month on Teams, 50 on Enterprise. AI Autofix costs 20 credits per finding, and when credits run out AI-powered detection scans, autofixes and agentic workflows stop while AI autotriage continues with a warning. Plan credits expire at contract end and do not roll over.
  • The Free Edition does not list Secrets and has no SSO beyond GitHub/GitLab sign-in or RBAC; the pricing page lists private repository caps of 10 on Free and 500 on Teams. Scans stop when contributors exceed the Free limit of 10.
  • Semgrep's docs say AI detection source data (prompts, responses, code snippets, scan reports) is kept up to 6 months, remediation data and memories are kept indefinitely, and AI-powered detection scans send full file contents to AI providers. The docs do not say whether Semgrep uses customer data to train its own models, and do not address regional data rules.

GitGuardian

Secrets-detection platform for code, CI/CD and other sources; a free Starter plan covers up to 25 developers, and paid plan pricing is not published.

Who it is for

Development and security teams that want to find leaked secrets in repositories and related tools, from small teams on the free plan to larger organizations on sales-led tiers. The pricing page sells Endpoint Protection and non-human identity (NHI) governance as separate or higher-tier items for security teams.

Strengths

  • The pricing page lists a free Starter plan ($0, no credit card) with unlimited real-time scanning for up to 25 developers.
  • The pricing page lists Git repository sources on Starter (GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps); Growth adds CI/CD, container registries and AI agent configs, and Enterprise adds collaboration tools such as ticketing, messaging and documentation.
  • Growth is listed with remediation notifiers (Slack, Teams, email, Jira, ServiceNow), SSO (SAML 2.0), SCIM and a choice of US or EU data hosting.
  • The docs list AI features: a machine-learning false-positive remover, a 0-100 incident risk score with an explanation, secret enrichment of generic detections, AI-agent analysis of public incidents (beta) and grouping of similar issues. The docs say the list is not exhaustive.
  • The AI Management Policy says customer data is not used to train models, secret values are redacted before data goes to an LLM, and requests are processed in the instance's region (EU or US). It also says external LLM calls can be disabled in AI settings or routed through the customer's own cloud.
  • Enterprise is listed with self-hosted deployment, unlimited teams, custom RBAC and custom detectors, 12-month audit log retention and 60 GB repo scanning.

Limitations

  • Starter is limited to 500 historical scan detections, 10K API calls a month, 1 GB repo scanning, internal secrets monitoring and a 'Limited' ggshield CLI and pre-commit hooks (the page does not say what the limit is); AI risk scoring and false-positive filtering are listed under Growth.
  • Teams (Business), Growth and Enterprise prices are not published ('Let's Talk', 'Contact sales', 'Custom'); the page does not say whether billing is annual or monthly, does not state the trial length and does not address refunds or cancellation.
  • Seats are counted per developer: internal monitoring and NHI Governance count active contributors with a commit in the last 90 days, and public monitoring counts publicly active developers. Endpoint Protection is a separate add-on priced per endpoint per year with no amount listed; collaboration-tool scanning and Premium Care are Enterprise add-ons.
  • The pricing page is inconsistent: the mid tier is called Teams (Business) in the cards and Growth in the detailed section; Teams lists up to 20 teams but Growth up to 10; Enterprise lists unlimited API calls while the FAQ cites a 1M a month default for the business plan; Growth lists limited public monitoring and Enterprise unlimited.
