What is Instrumentl?
Instrumentl is web-based grant software that matches organizations with funders and open grant opportunities, then helps track applications, awards and budgets. The vendor describes four stages: Discover, Apply, Manage and Collaborate.
Who it's for
The vendor says it is for nonprofits, grant consultants and universities. Its University plan help article says the database is mostly U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofits and universities, and that it is not for individual students seeking scholarships.
Pros & cons
Strengths
- The vendor lists 450,000+ funder profiles and 37,000+ active RFPs (also shown as 37K+ active grants) on its pricing and home pages.
- The home page describes AI-powered funder matching, saved searches with weekly updates, and AI-assisted proposal drafting that uses 10+ years of Form 990 data.
- The pricing page lists a post-award toolset in the Full Lifecycle plan: spenddown visibility, planned expenses, accounting integrations, budget vs. actual reports and over/under spend notifications.
- The pricing page lists calendar integration (Google, Outlook) and CRM sync from the Pre-Award plan up; help articles name Salesforce, Raiser's Edge NXT and Virtuous as CRM integrations.
- The home page says it is SOC 2 Type II certified, with encryption at rest and in transit, and that its AI features never train on customer data; SSO is listed on the Full Lifecycle plan. It does not name a separate donor-data policy.
- All plans include a 14-day free trial, and the vendor says no credit card is required.
Limitations
- There is no free plan: the pricing page lists a 14-day trial, then paid plans starting at $299 a month on annual billing or $349 monthly (Discover, up to 3 users).
- Features are tiered: peer prospecting, application tools, calendar and CRM integrations, the Award Assistant and collaborator access are not in Discover; budget and accounting tools, SSO and API access start at Full Lifecycle ($999 a month annual).
- The Discover plan's prospecting assistant is labeled beta, and the pricing page lists user caps (3, 5 and 15 users on the three self-serve plans) but does not state grant match or AI usage limits.
- Enterprise and University plans have no public price. The University plan page says to contact the vendor for price, users and projects.
- Subscriptions renew automatically and unused time is not refunded on cancellation; only Core Users with the Admin role can cancel, and data cannot be recovered from inactive accounts, with closed-account data scheduled for deletion 30 days after the last day of service.
- The vendor's help center still has Basic and Professional plan articles (for example, 5 projects and 3 Core users on Basic) that do not match the current Discover, Pre-Award and Full Lifecycle plans on the pricing page.
