What is OpenEvidence?
OpenEvidence is a clinical information platform that answers questions with cited findings from medical literature, including content from NEJM and JAMA Network journals per its pages. It runs on the web and on iOS and Android, and also offers a Visits workspace that transcribes patient encounters and adds evidence to the note.
Who it's for
The vendor aims it at verified U.S. health care professionals, and says it is free for them. An Enterprise version is for U.S. health systems and provider organizations that support verified clinicians; the vendor says other types of businesses are not currently eligible, and it is not a consumer tool.
Pros & cons
Strengths
- The vendor says OpenEvidence is free and unlimited for health care professionals, and its patient-facing pages say it is free for verified U.S. health care professionals.
- The vendor lists content agreements with JAMA and The New England Journal of Medicine, and says it surfaces findings from NEJM, JAMA and JAMA Network specialty journals.
- Visits, per the vendor, transcribes patient encounters, adds guidelines and research to the assessment and plan, supports custom note templates, and lets users upload patient documents into a searchable repository.
- Enterprise supports single sign-on through the organization's login, EHR launch where available, a Business Associate Agreement, and configurable retention and deletion policies, per the vendor.
- The vendor says it complies with HIPAA, encrypts data with TLS 1.2 in transit and AES-256 at rest, and has an annual external penetration test; the Enterprise page also cites SOC 2 Type II.
- The vendor lists a mobile app for iOS and Android, and other tools named on its site include DeepConsult, Coding Intelligence and Doctor Dialer.
Limitations
- Access is limited to verified U.S. health care professionals; the privacy policy says the company may verify credentials and deny access, and tells users in the EU or other stricter-privacy countries not to use the service.
- The vendor's pages disagree on patient data: an April 2025 announcement says U.S. covered entities can enter PHI under a Business Associate Agreement, while the privacy policy says user questions and inputs are not covered by HIPAA and users must make sure inputs contain no PHI.
- The privacy policy does not say questions are used to train AI models, but says data may be used to improve the services and that user data, including prompts, may be sold to third parties or monetized as a commercial data feed. The Enterprise page says PHI and clinician prompts are not used to train models.
- The free service is advertising-supported: the privacy policy says ads and sponsored emails are personalized using specialty and inferred interests, and that sponsors may receive a user's name and specialty. Sponsored content is labeled as such.
- The About page describes OpenEvidence as an experimental technology demonstrator that does not provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. The pages read do not state any FDA clearance, so it should not be treated as a cleared medical device.
- Enterprise is described as available at no cost to organizations, but no usage limits, contract terms or other pricing are published; the Visits page does not describe privacy or storage safeguards.
Plans and pricing
- Individual (verified U.S. health care professionals): $0. Vendor says free for verified U.S. health care professionals; no usage cap or paid tier is listed on the pages read. Ad-supported.
- Visits: $0. Vendor says free for verified U.S. health care professionals. Transcribes encounters, drafts note content with evidence, and keeps a searchable patient-document repository.

Read from the vendor's news, patients, Enterprise, Visits and privacy pages; no pricing page exists and no paid plan is listed. Confirm on the live site before relying on any free or no-cost statement.
