What is Paperguide?

Paperguide is an AI research workspace that combines paper search, chat with PDFs, literature reviews, systematic reviews, a reference manager, and an AI writing editor. It runs on the web at paperguide.ai, with a Chrome extension for retrieving PDFs and an MCP server for connecting to other AI assistants.

Who it's for

Its pricing page describes the Plus plan as for students and independent researchers, and the Evidence plan as for teams running systematic reviews. The help center does not name an audience directly, but its examples cover exploring a topic, running a formal systematic review, and drafting a paper.

Pros & cons

Strengths

  • The help center lists a Research Agent, AI Search, Literature Review, Deep Research Report, and Chat with PDF that share context with the workspace library.
  • Systematic Review launched in July 2026 and covers protocols, paper screening, data extraction, and a PRISMA report; Dual Review with two independent reviewers and a conflict resolver was added in September 2026.
  • The Free plan includes 1,500 AI credits a month, plus Zotero and Mendeley import, Chat with PDF, the AI Writer, and the Paperguide MCP.
  • Paid plans list unlimited Reference Manager and AI Searches, export to RIS, CSV, BIB, PDF, and DOCX, and collaboration on references and writing.
  • The terms say users keep ownership of uploaded and generated content and that the license to it does not permit training generalized AI models.
  • The changelog says the PDF upload limit on paid plans rose from 50MB to 100MB on 7 Aug 2026, and that the MCP server can search papers and read the reference manager.

Limitations

  • Usage is metered in AI credits (1,500 on Free, 12,500 on Plus, 50,000 on Pro, 150,000 on Evidence), and the terms say unused credits expire at period end.
  • The Free plan caps Extract Data at 5 columns and 10 papers per table, plagiarism checking at 4,000 words a month, and Search API at 10 requests a month; the Reference Manager and AI Searches are limited.
  • Systematic reviews are limited to 1,000 papers on Plus and 5,000 on Pro and Evidence; dual reviewer screening is listed only on Evidence and Enterprise, and image and table extraction is marked Coming soon.
  • Paid plans are priced per seat, and the changelog says organization accounts and team workspaces need a plan with 2 or more seats.
  • The terms say refunds for partial periods are generally not offered, except where law requires or a money-back window applies that the terms say is listed in the pricing FAQ; the FAQ answers could not be read.
