What is Undermind?
An AI research assistant for scientific literature that asks follow-up questions, runs a deep search and follows citation trails, and answers with in-line citations. It runs as a web app and can also be connected to AI agents such as Claude and ChatGPT through an MCP connector.
Who it's for
Researchers who need to find papers on a topic, with full-text and figure-level reading, relevance filtering and new-paper alerts; the vendor also sells Team and Enterprise tiers for organizations. The site shows a case study with a pharmaceutical company, and the Enterprise page says proprietary R&D data is isolated.
Pros & cons
Strengths
- The pricing section lists a Free plan at $0 that includes chat, deep searches and reports, shared workspaces and connections to agents such as Claude and ChatGPT, under standard rate limits.
- The MCP page lists setup steps for ChatGPT, Claude (web, desktop and Claude Code), Cursor, VS Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot (via Copilot Studio), Gemini, Grok, Perplexity and other apps that accept an MCP server URL.
- The MCP page lists tools such as launch_deep_search, search_papers and read_pdfs, covering deep literature search, reading full-text PDFs, writing reports, starring papers and organizing results into workspace folders.
- The homepage lists guided search with follow-up questions, brainstorming with custom tables, in-line citations that trace statements to source papers, relevance sorting and alerts when relevant papers are published.
- The Enterprise page says customers own their inputs and outputs, that an organization's data can be fully removed on request, and that the data is encrypted in transit and at rest with independent penetration testing.
- The Enterprise page and the security one-pager say customer data is never used to train AI models, and that agreements with third-party model providers prohibit long-term retention and training on it.
Limitations
- The Free plan is described only as having standard rate limits on chats and searches; the pages read do not give the number of searches or chats. Pro is described as 10x higher usage limits, also without a number.
- The prices read are annual-billing equivalents ($16 a month for Pro, $15 per person a month for Team). The page shows a Monthly/Annual toggle and says annual saves 20%, but the monthly-billing prices could not be read.
- Enterprise has no public price (contact sales); SSO details, deployment options and usage limits are not described on the Enterprise page.
- The MCP page does not name which Undermind tier the connector needs, says paywalled PDFs can be read only after you upload them to the workspace, and lists limits such as Cursor web Cloud Agents not being supported yet.
- The security one-pager names no compliance frameworks or certifications (such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001) and gives no retention periods for Undermind's own storage. The training statements read refer to company or enterprise data; the Terms and Privacy pages could not be fetched, so consumer-plan training terms were not confirmed.

- Enterprise: Custom pricing. Everything in Team plus increased compute, sitewide organizational login, onboarding seminars, an admin dashboard, custom terms/SLA/security review and dedicated support.
