Augment Code vs Cursor

Augment Code and Cursor side by side: what each one is, what it costs to start, and whether you can try it free. Everything below comes from the vendors' own sites and other public sources, not from hands-on testing.

Neither tool is ranked above the other here. These are research-based profiles, not hands-on tests. Starting price is the lowest listed paid plan per month (annual-billing equivalent where the vendor lists one), as shown on the vendor's own site when we last checked. Prices change, so confirm on the vendor's site. How this site works.

Key differences

Cursor lists a free tier and Augment Code does not.

Cursor has the lower starting price ($8/mo against $20/mo for Augment Code). The cheapest plan rarely has the same limits or features, so compare plans before choosing on price.

Both are in our Code & Dev Tools category.

About each tool

Augment Code

Coding agent for VS Code, JetBrains and a CLI, with an indexed Context Engine for large codebases. Standard is $20 a month flat (up to 50 seats), including $20 of usage.

Who it is for

It suits developers and teams working in larger codebases who want an agent with indexed code context, and the docs describe the Business plan as covering up to 50 seats. Teams above 50 seats, or needing custom setups, are pointed to Enterprise.

Strengths

  • The docs list VS Code, JetBrains IDEs (including WebStorm, PyCharm and IntelliJ) and the Auggie CLI as supported surfaces.
  • The Context Engine MCP docs say it runs locally through the Auggie CLI or as an Augment-hosted remote server, and list clients such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Zed, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and Kiro.
  • The pricing page lists Standard ($20) and Business ($100) as flat monthly prices with no per-seat charge, for up to 50 seats, with included usage pooled across the team.
  • The pricing page says Code Review is available on all plans and lists SOC 2 Type II on all plans; paid plans exclude AI training on customer data under the Commercial Terms of Service.
  • The pricing page lists Enterprise items such as CMEK, ISO 42001, SIEM, data residency, SSO/OIDC/SCIM, audit trails and multi-region compute.

Limitations

  • No free plan is listed. The pricing page does not describe a free tier or trial length (trial and beta usage gets community support with no SLA), and it does not mention refunds or cancellation.
  • Included usage is a dollar amount ($20 on Standard, $100 on Business) covering LLM inference, Context Engine and compute. LLM usage is billed at the model provider's list price plus a 40% service fee; the docs give Cosmos compute at $0.19 an hour in 5-minute increments.

Cursor

AI code editor for Windows, macOS and Linux with Agent, Chat and Tab. Free plan with limited usage; paid plans from $8 a month with a weekly usage pool, up to $200 for Ultra.

Who it is for

Individual developers on the Free, Plus, Premium, Super or Ultra plans. Teams and Enterprise plans add shared billing, admin controls and SSO for organizations.

Strengths

  • A Free plan includes Agent, Chat and Tab completions with Cursor's own models, with limited usage
  • Paid plans have one weekly usage pool for Cursor models, shared across Agent, the command line and Cloud Agents, and the docs say it refreshes weekly
  • With Privacy Mode on, Cursor says customer data will not be used for training by Cursor, and that it has zero-data-retention agreements with all its model providers
  • The desktop app is offered for macOS (Apple Silicon, Intel, Universal), Windows (x64, ARM64) and Linux (x64, ARM64; .deb, RPM, AppImage)
  • Teams and Enterprise list SAML and OIDC SSO, usage analytics and team-wide privacy settings, and Enterprise adds SCIM, audit logs and invoice billing

Limitations

  • Free usage is limited for Agent, Chat and Tab, and no numeric limits are published
  • Plus ($8) does not include Auto, Cloud Agents, Automations, Bugbot or third-party models, which are listed from Premium ($30) up
  • Third-party models are not covered by the weekly pool. They are billed at API list price from prepaid credit, and a monthly additional-usage limit caps extra spend
  • With Privacy Mode off, Cursor may use and store codebase data, prompts, editor actions and code snippets to improve its AI features and train models
