Tolgee and Weblate side by side: what each one is, what it costs to start, and whether you can try it free. Everything below comes from the vendors' own sites and other public sources, not from hands-on testing.

Neither tool is ranked above the other here. These are research-based profiles, not hands-on tests. Starting price is the lowest listed paid plan per month (annual-billing equivalent where the vendor lists one), as shown on the vendor's own site when we last checked. Prices change, so confirm on the vendor's site. How this site works.

About each tool

Tolgee

Open-source localization platform with a free cloud plan, a free self-hosted version, and paid cloud plans from €58 a month billed annually.

Who it is for

Tolgee describes its audience as developers plus the non-developers they delegate translation to, such as colleagues, clients or volunteer translators. Its pricing page points teams with security, compliance or data residency needs to the self-hosted option.

Strengths

  • Tolgee lists a permanent free cloud plan with 30,000 hosted words, 3 seats and no credit card required; its homepage also lists 10,000 MT credits on that plan.
  • Tolgee says paid cloud plans (Translate, Optimise, Manage) include unlimited seats and 400,000 MT credits, and that machine translation is included on every cloud plan.
  • Tolgee lists machine translation through Tolgee AI, Google Translate, Amazon Translate, DeepL and Microsoft Azure Translator, and says you can use your own keys for providers such as OpenAI, Azure, Anthropic and Google AI.
  • Tolgee says the free self-hosted version has unlimited keys and up to 10 seats, with the core under the Apache License 2.0 and a Tolgee Enterprise Edition License covering the ee/ directories.
  • Tolgee lists ISO 27001 certification and says it does not hold SOC 2 today. It says the Optimise plan is free for open-source projects.

Limitations

  • The pricing page does not show hosted-word limits for the paid cloud tiers. A comparison page on tolgee.io shows paid tiers 'from 50,000' words, which is not on the pricing page. Hosted words count the base text and every translation.
  • Tolgee says there is no pay-as-you-go overage on hosted words and that auto-upgrade to a higher tier is on by default; the pricing page also says annual payers may still be charged monthly if they exceed limits. Confirm how this applies to you.
  • Tolgee's terms say MT credits used beyond the subscription are charged as excess use, and that fees are non-cancelable and non-refundable unless the terms say otherwise. Subscriptions renew automatically, with non-renewal by written notice.
  • SSO, a dedicated Slack channel, premium support and an account manager are listed under Enterprise. The pricing page does not detail per-plan feature differences among Translate, Optimise and Manage, and a comparison page lists granular permissions, activity history and tasks under Manage.

Weblate

Open-source (GPLv3+) localization platform; free for public open-source projects. Hosted plans start at about €39 a month billed annually (€470 a year; €47 monthly).

Who it is for

Software teams and open-source projects that keep translations in sync with their code. Weblate lists a free Libre plan for public open-source projects and hosted plans sized by string count for other teams.

Strengths

  • Weblate's features page lists more than 50 file formats, including JSON, YAML, PO/MO, XLIFF 1.x and 2.0, Android and Apple strings, RESX, Qt TS, ARB, Markdown, and Excel.
  • It lists customizable quality checks, shared glossaries, translation memory, screenshots, and a review step before a translation is marked complete.
  • The docs list machine translation and LLM suggestions from services including DeepL, Google Cloud Translation, Amazon Translate, Azure AI Translator, OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, and Ollama. Translation memory is applied before machine translation.
  • Weblate says hosted data and backups are stored and processed in the EU.

Limitations

  • Hosted plans are metered by hosted strings, counted as source strings x (translation languages + 1), so adding a language raises the count.
  • SSO, a custom domain, and branding options are listed for dedicated instances, which are priced yearly from the 160k tier; the pricing page text did not show which plan includes which option.
  • Prices are in euros and exclude VAT; EU end users and Czech companies pay an extra 21%. Weblate's terms say subscriptions renew automatically and must be canceled at least three days before renewal, and that the provider does not refund any money for services. The pricing page says annual billing saves 20%, but the listed yearly prices are ten times the monthly prices (about 17% off).
