What is Weblate?

Weblate is a web-based continuous localization platform released as libre software under the GNU GPLv3 or later. It connects to a Git repository, manages translation files and review in the browser, and can be self-hosted or used as the hosted service at weblate.org.

Who it's for

Software teams and open-source projects that keep translations in sync with their code. Weblate lists a free Libre plan for public open-source projects and hosted plans sized by string count for other teams.

Pros & cons

Strengths

  • Weblate's features page lists more than 50 file formats, including JSON, YAML, PO/MO, XLIFF 1.x and 2.0, Android and Apple strings, RESX, Qt TS, ARB, Markdown, and Excel.
  • It lists Git integration that commits translations back to the repository, with an approved-only commit policy, plus a REST API and add-ons for recurring tasks.
  • It lists customizable quality checks, shared glossaries, translation memory, screenshots, and a review step before a translation is marked complete.
  • The docs list machine translation and LLM suggestions from services including DeepL, Google Cloud Translation, Amazon Translate, Azure AI Translator, OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, and Ollama. Translation memory is applied before machine translation.
  • Weblate says hosted plans include unlimited languages, projects, components, and translators, premium support from core developers, and a 14-day trial; only hosted strings are metered.
  • Weblate says hosted data and backups are stored and processed in the EU.

Limitations

  • Hosted plans are metered by hosted strings, counted as source strings x (translation languages + 1), so adding a language raises the count.
  • Machine translation and LLM services are third-party. The docs say they can receive source strings, translations, and related context, and LLM services also receive glossary entries, placeholder contents, and earlier translations. Ollama stays local only if you point it at a local server.
  • The Libre plan is only for public projects and has the same limits as the 160k plan.
  • SSO, a custom domain, and branding options are listed for dedicated instances, which are priced yearly from the 160k tier; the pricing page text did not show which plan includes which option.
  • Prices are in euros and exclude VAT; EU end users and Czech companies pay an extra 21%. Weblate's terms say subscriptions renew automatically and must be canceled at least three days before renewal, and that the provider does not refund any money for services. The pricing page says annual billing saves 20%, but the listed yearly prices are ten times the monthly prices (about 17% off).

Plans and pricing

  • Libre (public open-source projects): Free. Same limits as the 160k plan; public projects only.
  • 10k strings: €470 a year, or €47 monthly. 10,000 hosted strings; unlimited languages, projects, components, and translators; 14-day trial on cloud plans.
  • 40k strings: €700 a year, or €70 monthly. 40,000 hosted strings.
  • 160k strings: €1,140 a year, or €114 monthly. 160,000 hosted strings. A dedicated instance (yearly) is listed at the same price from this tier.
  • 640k strings: €1,930 a year, or €193 monthly. 640,000 hosted strings; dedicated instance listed at the same yearly price.
  • 2.5M strings: €3,420 a year, or €342 monthly. 2,560,000 hosted strings; dedicated instance listed at the same yearly price.
  • 10M strings and Custom: €6,160 a year, or €616 monthly. 10,240,000 hosted strings. Larger volumes are quoted on request.

Prices were read from weblate.org/try/ and the /sl/hosting/ mirror of the hosting page, which agree (euros, excluding VAT); weblate.org/hosting/ itself could not be fetched. The comparison section says cloud is 'From €39 a month', which equals the 10k yearly price divided by 12 (€470 / 12); self-hosted support is listed separately at €53 a month (Basic) and €106 a month (Extended).
