What is CoCounsel?
CoCounsel is Thomson Reuters' AI assistant for legal professionals (originally Casetext's CoCounsel, acquired in 2023), covering research, drafting and document analysis. The vendor says CoCounsel Legal is grounded in Westlaw and Practical Law content and works on the web and inside Microsoft Word, Outlook and Teams.
Who it's for
The vendor lists law firms from solo practitioners to global firms, in-house legal departments including nonprofits, and government agencies, courts and educational institutions. It is a professional tool, and the vendor says it supports rather than replaces professional judgment.
Pros & cons
Strengths
- Thomson Reuters says CoCounsel Legal turns a plain-language request into a step-by-step plan you can inspect, and returns cited work product with linked citations for verification.
- The vendor lists Deep Research (multi-step research with a visible reasoning trail), guided workflows, Workspaces for matter documents, Westlaw Brief Builder and Tabular Analysis (up to 10,000 documents against 100 questions).
- Content sources named by the vendor are Westlaw, Practical Law and the customer's own documents; a January 2026 press release says CoCounsel Legal launched in the UK with Westlaw Advantage covering UK legal content.
- Integrations listed by the vendor include iManage, NetDocuments, SharePoint, HighQ, Box, DeepJudge, Smokeball, Litify, Microsoft Word, Outlook and Teams, and Claude through a CoCounsel Legal MCP.
- The vendor says user content and prompts are not used to train or improve CoCounsel, its underlying LLMs or third-party models, that OpenAI and Google are contractually barred from training on customer data, and that it uses zero-retention API calls.
- The vendor states data is encrypted with TLS 1.2 in transit and AES-256 at rest, that CoCounsel Legal is SOC 2 and ISO 42001 certified, and that region-based hosting is available in the UK, Australia and Canada.
Limitations
- No prices are published. The plan pages show pricing only after you enter your sector, number of attorneys, jurisdiction and plan length, and online pricing is for new customers only.
- Plans are sold as 1-, 2- or 3-year terms, and the vendor says longer terms typically cost less. Its plan pages do not state cancellation or refund terms.
- Tiers are bundles: the 700 tier includes Westlaw Advantage, Practical Law Dynamic Tool Set and CoCounsel Essentials, while Essentials alone is a Word-based skills product. Online plan pages mention firms of 1-10 attorneys, and larger firms are sent to a sales rep.
- Stored data and processing are in the U.S. by default, and retention periods are set per organization with a Thomson Reuters client manager. Tabular Analysis is currently U.S.-only per the UK press release, with localized versions to follow; the 300 tier page gives no description of its contents.
- The pages read do not address attorney-client privilege specifically. Outputs should be checked by a qualified lawyer, and the vendor itself describes the product as supporting professional judgment.
