What is Fish Audio?
Fish Audio is a text-to-speech and voice cloning service that also lists speech-to-text and a Voice Design feature. It runs as a web app and as a developer API (REST, WebSocket streaming, Python and TypeScript SDKs).
Who it's for
It suits people who generate voiceovers from text or want cloned voices, and developers who want pay-as-you-go API access with no monthly minimum. Larger teams are offered multi-seat plans, and Enterprise adds organization controls and self-hosting options.
Pros & cons
Strengths
- Fish Audio lists a Free plan at $0 with 8,000 credits a month and no credit card needed.
- The API docs list pay-as-you-go pricing with no subscription fees or monthly minimums: speech generation at $15.00 per million UTF-8 bytes, speech-to-text at $0.36 per audio hour, and Voice Design at $0.01 per successful request.
- The docs list a free API model (s2.1-pro-free) at $0.00 that uses the same endpoint, described as free under fair-use limits and meant for testing, prototyping and development.
- The docs say the current speech model covers 83 languages with automatic language detection, and accepts free-form bracket cues such as [whispers sweetly] to direct emotion and style.
- Paid plans list team seats (3 on Pro, 10 on Max) and professional voice slots (1 on Plus, 5 on Pro, 15 on Max); Plus and above list Voice Design access.
- The Enterprise page lists zero data retention, role-based access at team and workspace level, a signable BAA for qualifying healthcare workloads, and a self-host tier for VPC, on-prem and air-gapped deployments.
Limitations
- Free is capped at up to 7 minutes of generation a month and 500 characters per generation; credits reset each month and unused minutes do not roll over.
- The pricing page lists Commercial use under Free, but its FAQ and the Terms of Use say free users may use content only for personal, non-commercial projects.
- The pricing FAQ says annual billing saves 33%, but the listed prices imply about 27% for Plus and 25% for Pro and Max.
- The Terms of Use (effective August 18, 2024) say usage data and content may be used to develop, train or enhance AI models, grant Fish Audio a perpetual license to submitted content, and say subscriptions are not eligible for a prorated refund, while the Pro plan lists a 7-day money-back guarantee.
- API concurrency depends on prepaid amount: 5 concurrent requests under $100, 15 from $100, 50 from $1,000; at the limit the API returns HTTP 429. The Enterprise page says SOC 2 Type II is still being audited, while the pricing page lists SOC2 compliance.
Plans and pricing
- Free: $0. 8,000 credits a month, up to 7 minutes, 500 characters per generation, 3 public voice slots, standard generation speed.
- Plus: $11 a month billed annually ($132 a year), or $15 monthly. 250,000 credits a month, up to 200 minutes, 15,000 characters per generation, unlimited public and 10 private voices, 1 professional voice slot, Voice Design access.
- Pro: $75 a month billed annually ($900 a year), or $100 monthly. 2,000,000 credits a month, up to 1,620 minutes, 30,000 characters per generation, 3 team seats, 5 professional voice slots, 7-day money-back guarantee.
- Max: $749 a month billed annually ($8,988 a year), or $999 monthly. 25,000,000 credits a month, up to 6,250 minutes, 10 team seats, 15 professional voice slots; characters per generation not listed.
- Enterprise: Custom. Volume pricing billed annually, zero data retention, on-premise deployment option; the Enterprise page says it starts at $999 a month.
Prices were read from the official pricing page, the API pricing docs page and the Enterprise page this session. The pricing page lists Enterprise as custom while the Enterprise page says it starts at $999 a month, the FAQ's credit cost of about 600 to 625 credits per minute does not match the Free plan's 7 minutes, and the Enterprise page prices speech generation per 1M characters where the docs say UTF-8 bytes.
