What is Leonardo AI?
Leonardo.Ai is a web platform for generating images and video from text prompts and reference images, with editing tools, a real-time canvas, custom model training and an API. In a July 2024 announcement the company said it was becoming part of the Canva family and would continue to run as an independent platform.
Who it's for
Individual creators on the Free, Essential, Premium and Ultimate plans, and teams on shared-token seat plans. Developers can use the pay-as-you-go API.
Pros & cons
Strengths
- The Free plan gives 150 fast tokens a day
- Paid plans keep unused monthly tokens in a rollover bank that holds up to three months' worth
- Paid plans have private generations, and the Terms of Service say private content is not used to train AI models without written consent
- Text-to-video, image-to-video, in-painting, out-painting, a real-time canvas, custom model training and Blueprints workflows are listed in the vendor's own material
- Team plans list SOC 2 Type I and Type II accreditation and private team generations
Limitations
- Free plan creations are public, and the Terms of Service say the Free plan's outputs vest in Leonardo, which grants the user a non-exclusive commercial licence. A vendor blog says Free plans include commercial use, so read the Terms
- Free daily tokens do not accumulate and expire at the daily reset
- Premium's unlimited generation is relaxed-queue image generation on select first-party models only, Ultimate adds video, and third-party models always use tokens
- Rollover tokens are used only after the fast tokens run out. Top-up tokens need an active subscription, and Teams plans cannot buy top-ups
- Different features cost different token amounts. For example, Alchemy V2 costs 16 tokens an image, Full 3D Texture Generation costs 30 and the Upscaler costs 5
- Per the Terms of Service, public content on paid plans gives Leonardo a broad licence, including for AI training, unless you generate privately

Monthly prices and token amounts are from Leonardo's pricing page and help center, and prices exclude tax. The yearly prices come from a vendor blog post, because the pricing page says only up to 20% off. The pricing, team-plans and Terms pages do not state who owns the company; the Canva statement is from a vendor announcement. Confirm on the live pricing page.
