What is MarketMuse?

A web-based content planning and optimization tool that analyzes your content inventory, competitor content and topic difficulty to produce content plans, topic clusters and content briefs. It is sold by Siteimprove (which acquired MarketMuse in 2024) and runs in the browser.

Who it's for

The vendor names brands, publishers and agencies, with SEOs, content strategists, editors, writers and content managers as day-to-day users. The home page says it does not replace a CMS and does not write content for customers, although the Optimize application includes a generative AI component for drafting.

Pros & cons

Strengths

  • The pricing page lists a Free plan with 1 user and 10 queries a month, which includes Topic Navigator, Keywords, SERP X-ray, SERP Heatmap, Site Heatmap and Connect.
  • The pricing page lists paid tiers named Optimize (100 queries a month, 5 Article briefs, 1 Strategy Document), Research (3 users, unlimited queries, 10 briefs) and Strategy (5 users, unlimited queries, 20 briefs of all 9 types).
  • The home page lists Content Briefs, Content Clusters, Competitive Content Analysis, Content Planning with difficulty scoring, and a content inventory feature that analyzes your existing content.
  • The pricing page lists tracked-topic limits of 100 (Optimize), 1,000 (Research) and 10,000 (Strategy).
  • The terms of service say customer data stays the customer's property and that the vendor does not resell it.
  • The help center says an account can be downgraded to a Free account.

Limitations

  • The pricing page published no dollar prices when read; paid plans link to a booking-a-demo page, so cost has to be obtained from sales. Third-party sites report starting prices of around $99 a month, but these are estimates, not vendor figures.
  • Free-plan limits are tight: 10 queries a month, no site inventory, no Content Briefs or Strategy Documents, and export limited to saved writing.
  • Paid tiers cap output per month (briefs and Strategy Documents), and only the Strategy tier includes all 9 brief types; Optimize and Research briefs are Article only.
  • The pricing page lists 1 site inventory for Strategy in its comparison table, while its FAQ says you can add more sites as needed; confirm with the vendor how many sites a plan covers.
  • The terms of service say fees are prepaid, subscriptions renew automatically, and fees are non-refundable with no credit for unused time, except for uncured material breach or an unfixed warranty issue. Unless the order says otherwise the term is one month.
  • The terms say AI features are powered by third parties including OpenAI and Amazon Bedrock, which process customer data, and that customers consent to this; they do not expressly say whether customer data is used for model training.

Plans and pricing

  • Free: $0. 1 user and 10 queries a month; no site inventory, Content Briefs or Strategy Documents; export limited to saved writing.
  • Optimize: Not published (book a demo). 1 user, 1 site inventory, 100 tracked topics, 100 queries a month, 5 Article briefs and 1 Strategy Document a month.
  • Research: Not published (book a demo). 3 users, 1 site inventory, 1,000 tracked topics, unlimited queries, 10 Article briefs and 3 Strategy Documents a month.
  • Strategy: Not published (book a demo). 5 users, 10,000 tracked topics, unlimited queries, 20 briefs of all 9 types and 5 Strategy Documents a month; team workflows described in the FAQ.

Plan names and limits were read from the official pricing page, which showed no prices or billing basis for paid tiers. Reported by third-party sites only: about $99 a month for Optimize, with higher tiers quote-based; the terms say fees are in U.S. dollars and billed per the order term. Confirm on the live pricing page.
