What is Prowly?
Prowly was a PR software product that Semrush acquired in 2020; Prezly's comparison page says Prowly is now the Semrush AI PR Toolkit. The toolkit is a web-based media relations product for finding journalists and outlets, building media lists, sending pitches and, on higher plans, monitoring mentions.
Who it's for
Semrush describes it as a media relations platform for marketers, including people without PR experience. Its Business plan adds competitor tracking and multi-brand monitoring for teams that follow several brands.
Pros & cons
Strengths
- Semrush says the toolkit finds outlets and journalists that language models cite most often for a topic, and lists AI authority scores plus traffic and audience insights.
- Semrush lists a media database of over 1 million journalist profiles with natural-language search and media lists.
- Semrush lists AI help drafting pitches and press releases, tracking of opens, clicks and replies, and follow-ups scheduled from recipient behavior.
- Semrush says emails can be sent from an authenticated domain or by connecting a Gmail or Outlook inbox, with no IT setup or domain authentication needed for the inbox option.
- Semrush lists media monitoring across news, blogs, Reddit and YouTube on Pro and Business, with alerts and AI summaries; Business adds share of voice, sentiment, reach and backlink comparisons against competitors.
- Semrush says upgrades take effect immediately and are prorated, and that limits can be raised with add-ons at any time.
Limitations
- There is no permanent free plan. Semrush offers a 7-day free trial in which sending emails (no domain authorization), viewing and exporting contacts, and email performance statistics are limited or unavailable.
- Monthly caps apply: contacts added 250 / 500 / 1,000, exported contacts 0 / 150 / 500, email sends 500 / 1,250 / 3,500 and monitored mentions none / 3,000 / 50,000 on Base / Pro / Business. Limits reset on the first day of each month.
- Add-ons cost extra: +200 contacts $29 a month (Pro and Business), +200 exports $149 a month, +1,000 email sends $29 a month and +10,000 mentions $19 a month (Pro and Business). Additional users are a $20 a month add-on, and the pages read do not state how many users each plan includes.
- Semrush's pages disagree on billing basis: the pricing page labels $149, $279 and $499 as billed annually, while the pricing help article lists the same figures as monthly without mentioning annual billing. Monthly-billing prices could not be read.
- To downgrade you must contact support, canceling a paid plan ends access, and projects are deleted 90 days after you unsubscribe. The pages read did not state refund terms or data and AI-training terms.
