What is Adobe Substance 3D?

Adobe Substance 3D is a set of desktop apps for 3D texturing and material creation (Painter, Designer, Sampler) plus Stager for scene staging, sold by subscription with access to the Substance 3D Assets library. Adobe's docs list Firefly-based generative features such as Text to Texture in Sampler; the Painter docs list Windows, macOS on Apple silicon and Linux.

Who it's for

Adobe sells it to individual 3D artists and designers, to teams (an admin console and license management), and to students and teachers at accredited higher education institutions for personal, non-commercial use. Substance 3D plans are not part of Creative Cloud All Apps, per Adobe's plan page.

Pros & cons

Strengths

  • Adobe's plan page lists Painter, Designer, Sampler, Stager and Modeler in the Collection, with 100GB of cloud storage for individuals and 1TB for teams.
  • Adobe's Feb 2025 blog says subscribers get unmetered access to 20,000+ materials, models and HDRI lights, replacing a previous cap of 30 to 100 downloads a month.
  • Adobe's regional plan pages list generative credits: 100 a month on the Collection and 25 a month on the Texturing plan (Reported, region pages show no US price).
  • Adobe lists a cheaper Texturing plan (Painter, Designer, Sampler, plus Assets) and a 30-day free trial of the desktop apps on its plans page.
  • Adobe's Firefly FAQ says it does not train on Creative Cloud subscribers' personal content, and that copies of customer content are not included in the Firefly models.
  • Adobe's Painter docs list Windows 11, macOS on Apple silicon (M1 minimum) and Linux (RHEL 8/9, or Ubuntu 22.04 via Steam), with a stated minimum GPU of 8 GB VRAM on Windows.

Limitations

  • There is no free plan; the free option is a 30-day trial. Education access is limited to personal, non-commercial use.
  • Generative credits are metered per month (100 on the Collection, 25 on Texturing and Education, per Adobe's regional pages). The plans page I read shows no credit information, so confirm the cap for your region.
  • Adobe's pages disagree on several points: 20,000+ assets (blog) versus 'thousands' (plans pages); unmetered assets for Teams (blog) versus 50 3D assets a month for Team (Adobe's Collection page); and 5GB (plans page) versus 2GB (Collection page) of education storage.
  • Cancellation terms read on an Australian Texturing page: monthly plans cancel with no fee but are non-refundable after 14 days, and annual prepaid plans are non-refundable after 14 days. US terms were not read.
  • Prices differ by market and tax treatment (EUR prices include VAT for individuals and exclude it for teams), and Adobe says US prices may differ elsewhere. The Painter docs list GPU minimums, and integrated GPUs on x86-64 are not supported.

Plans and pricing

  • Substance 3D Texturing (individual): $24.99 a month, or $249.88 prepaid annually. Painter, Designer, Sampler; Assets unmetered. Reported from Adobe's Feb 2025 blog (new-subscriber price from March 25, 2025). Regional page lists 100GB storage and 25 monthly generative credits.
  • Substance 3D Collection (individual): $59.99 a month, or $599.88 prepaid annually. Painter, Designer, Sampler, Stager and Modeler; 100GB storage; 100 monthly generative credits per Adobe's Collection page. Reported from the Feb 2025 blog. EU page: EUR 57.47 a month incl. VAT.
  • Substance 3D Collection for teams: $119.99 a month per license, or $1,439.88 prepaid annually. Same five apps, 1TB storage, admin console, 24/7 support. Reported from the Feb 2025 blog (annual figure listed as MSRP). EU page: EUR 95.99 a month per license excl. VAT.
  • Students and teachers: Free per Adobe's Collection page (price not listed on the plans page). Collection apps for accredited higher education; personal, non-commercial use only. Storage listed as 2GB or 5GB depending on page; 25 monthly generative credits.

US prices come from Adobe's Feb 2025 pricing blog; Adobe's US product page, which the earlier profile used, could not be fetched this session, so Confirm on the live pricing page. The EU plans page shows EUR prices with no annual figure, and Adobe's Collection page shows no prices. Prices are as listed and not converted.

Details checked October 2026 against the vendor's own pages. Prices and limits change, so confirm before you buy. Official pricing page ↗
