What is GitHub Copilot?

GitHub Copilot is GitHub's AI coding assistant. It offers inline code suggestions, chat, code review and agent features in supported editors, on GitHub.com, in GitHub Mobile and in a command-line tool.

Who it's for

Individual developers, students, and teams or enterprises that want AI help inside their editors and GitHub workflows. GitHub sells separate individual, Business and Enterprise plans, with admin budgets and pooled credits for organizations.

Pros & cons

Strengths

  • A free plan is available, with 2,000 code completions a month and limited chat and agent use
  • GitHub's feature matrix lists VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode, Neovim and Eclipse, plus GitHub.com, GitHub Mobile and the command line
  • On paid plans, code completions and next edit suggestions do not use AI credits
  • Copilot Student is free for verified students, and GitHub says verified teachers and popular open-source maintainers may be eligible for free Copilot Pro
  • Business and Enterprise plans pool credits across the organization, with admin budgets at enterprise, cost-center and user level

Limitations

  • The Free plan uses automatic model selection only and has no cloud agent or code review beyond Review selection in VS Code
  • Usage is metered in AI credits (1 credit equals $0.01) based on token use. Included credits reset monthly and do not carry over
  • On individual plans, Copilot pauses once the included credits run out unless you turn on paid additional usage and set a budget
  • Annual Pro and Pro+ subscribers stay on the older premium-request system until the plan expires (300 and 1,500 requests a month, $0.04 per extra request), then move to Free
  • Features differ by editor. GitHub's matrix lists only code completion for Neovim among the features it compares, and no code review in Eclipse

Plans and pricing

  • Free: $0. 2,000 completions a month, limited chat and agent use, automatic model selection only.
  • Student: Free for verified students. Includes a credit allowance (amount not stated). Third-party agents are not included.
  • Pro: $10 a month (monthly billing). 1,500 AI credits a month ($15 worth). Adds the cloud agent and code review. Some verified teachers and open-source maintainers get it free.
  • Pro+: $39 a month (monthly billing). 7,000 AI credits a month ($70 worth). Adds premium models, audit logs and third-party agents, per the plans table.
  • Max: $100 a month (monthly billing). 20,000 AI credits a month ($200 worth) and priority access to new models and features.
  • Business: $19 per granted seat a month. 1,900 credits per user a month, pooled. Extra usage is $0.01 per credit.
  • Enterprise: $39 per granted seat a month. 3,900 credits per user a month, pooled. Extra usage is $0.01 per credit.

Prices are from GitHub's plans page and docs; we found no annual price. GitHub moved Copilot to AI-credit billing on 1 June 2026. The plans page contradicts itself on whether Pro includes third-party agents such as Claude Code or Codex (the text says yes, the table says no), so we list them under Pro+ only and you should confirm. The Business and Enterprise credit figures come from the docs; an April 2026 changelog gave different, possibly promotional, figures. Confirm on the live plans page.

Details checked October 2026 against the vendor's own pages. Prices and limits change, so confirm before you buy. Official pricing page ↗
