What is LanguageTool?
LanguageTool is a grammar, spelling and style checker that works in many languages and includes an AI rephrasing feature. The vendor lists browser add-ons (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera), Google Docs, Word, Apple Pages, LibreOffice, email clients, and macOS, Windows and iOS apps.
Who it's for
The vendor positions Basic as the plan for beginners and Premium for professionals, and sells a Teams plan and a separate business offering with a data processing agreement. It also sells a proofreading API for developers.
Pros & cons
Strengths
- The Premium page lists a 150,000-character limit per text field, against 2,000 on the free Basic plan.
- The vendor lists more than 20,000 additional checks for English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Polish and Portuguese in Premium, plus Picky Mode, a Personal Style Guide, a Personal Dictionary and text statistics.
- The vendor lists add-ons for Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera, integrations for Google Docs, Word, Apple Pages and LibreOffice, email support for Gmail, Apple Mail, Outlook (beta) and Thunderbird, and apps for macOS, Windows and iOS.
- The vendor says Premium comes with a 14-day money-back guarantee on all packages and can be canceled at any time with no notice period.
- The Teams plan adds invite-by-email user management, a Team Style Guide and a Team Dictionary on top of Premium benefits. The business page says admins decide who can add rules and dictionary words.
- The privacy policy says LanguageTool does not use inputs from any user (Individual or Team Plan) to train its language algorithms or models, by default and with no opt-out needed.
Limitations
- The free Basic plan is capped at 2,000 characters per text field, and the Premium page lists Picky Mode as limited and AI sentence rephrasing as 3 per day on Basic.
- The vendor's pages disagree on currency and amounts. The help center lists euro prices (for example 19.90 euros a month and 59.89 euros a year), while a third-party tracker reports dollar prices after a promotion ended in August 2026. Its live Premium page did not show prices when read.
- The privacy policy does not state a retention period for checked text, does not name the providers that process it, does not say where servers are, and says some content may be stored or used for internal analytics and service improvement.
- The business page lists no price, seat minimum or single sign-on; the Premium page shows a 2-user minimum for Teams. Business customers are pointed to a separate data processing agreement.
- The proofreading API is a separate product sold in call tiers (100 to 10,000 calls a day) with prices not shown on the page read.
Plans and pricing
- Basic: $0. Free. 2,000 characters per text field; Picky Mode limited; AI rephrasing 3 per day (as listed by the vendor).
- Premium (individual): Reported: $5.83 a month billed annually ($69.90 a year), or $24.90 monthly. 150,000 characters per text field, extra checks, unlimited AI rephrasing, Personal Style Guide and Dictionary. Quarterly ($49.90) and 2-year ($119.80) options are also reported.
- Teams: Reported: $5.53 per user a month billed annually. All Premium benefits plus user management, Team Style Guide and Team Dictionary; the page shows a 2-user minimum.
- Proofreading API: Not shown. Daily call tiers of 100, 250, 500, 1,000 and 10,000, billed monthly and cancelable at the end of any month; prices include VAT per the vendor.
The official Premium page loaded without prices (a price display error), so dollar figures come from the third-party tracker PricingSaaS (captured Aug 17, 2026) and are marked Reported. The help center lists euro prices instead (monthly 19.90, quarterly 39.90, annual 59.89, 2-year 99.90, Teams 56.90 per user a year), and the vendor says prices include VAT. Confirm on the live pricing page.
