What is Amp?

A coding agent from Amp (the company spun out of Sourcegraph) that works in threads and can run in cloud sandboxes the vendor calls orbs, or on your own machines through runners. The vendor's news page lists a Mac app and an Android app, and an older manual page lists a CLI, editor extensions and a web view for sharing threads.

Who it's for

Individual developers and teams who want a coding agent they can run with their own model keys or existing ChatGPT/Claude subscriptions, with optional paid hosted compute. The vendor also sells Enterprise workspaces with SSO, audit logs and custom terms.

Pros & cons

Strengths

  • The pricing docs say Amp does not add a markup to providers' API prices for individuals and non-enterprise workspaces; the example given is $2 of Anthropic usage plus $0.50 of OpenAI usage deducting $2.50 in credits.
  • The pricing page lists the Hobby plan at no cost, with unlimited self-hosted orbs, public and private repositories, and use of your own tokens or keys with no Amp token fees or limits.
  • The vendor lists BYOK providers including OpenRouter, Amazon Bedrock, Azure Foundry, Vercel AI Gateway, Cloudflare AI Gateway and Ollama Cloud, plus custom endpoint URLs, configured under Model Routing.
  • The security page says Amp is SOC 2 Type II certified, runs annual pentests, encrypts data in transit with TLS 1.2+ and at rest with AES-256, and removes a deleted thread's data within 30 days.
  • The vendor says neither Amp nor its subprocessors train models on your data unless you explicitly opt in; the terms and security page add that Enterprise workspaces can never enable training.
  • Teams are listed at no extra charge, with shared billing and pooled credits, shared BYOK and model routing, thread sharing, and SAML/OIDC SSO (a September 2026 post says free SSO applies when at least one member is on a paid tier).

Limitations

  • Hosted compute is metered: orbs are billed per minute from a separate allowance, with listed rates from $0.08 an hour (a1.tiny) to $2.13 an hour (a1.3xlarge); the largest size is limited to Gigawatt subscribers and Enterprise members.
  • Included usage is limited and expires: the Individual plan lists 45,000 minutes of Amp-hosted orb time that resets each billing period and does not roll over, and purchased credits expire 12 months after purchase.
  • Credits are non-refundable except where law requires; a refund request for the current subscription cycle returns the fee minus actual usage costs, according to the terms. Enterprise Order Forms are non-cancellable during the term unless the form says otherwise.
  • The old ad-supported Amp Free ($10 a day in free credits) was closed to new users in February 2026, ads were removed in March 2026, and a May 2026 update says the daily allowance is being paused or reduced for more users and restricted for older client versions.
  • The pricing page shows Megawatt and Gigawatt only as tiers of the $20 a month Individual plan and gives no separate Gigawatt price or per-tier usage; an older manual page says there is no monthly subscription, which conflicts with the pricing page. The vendor's pages name the company as both Amp Inc. (spin-out coverage) and Amp Frontier Corporation (terms).

Plans and pricing

  • Hobby: $0. All product features; Amp-hosted orbs are pay-as-you-go, self-hosted orbs and your own runners are free, and you can use your own keys or ChatGPT/Claude subscriptions. Paid credits are optional.
  • Individual - Megawatt: $20 a month. Lists 45,000 minutes of Amp-hosted orb time a month, custom portal domains and unlimited repositories. Students and teachers can get Megawatt for $10 a month.
  • Individual - Gigawatt: Not shown separately. Listed as the other Individual tier; a1.3xlarge orbs are limited to it. Price and usage not readable on the pages read.
  • Teams: No extra charge. Members can be on Hobby, Megawatt or Gigawatt; shared billing, pooled credits, shared BYOK and model routing, SAML/OIDC SSO, user controls and analytics.
  • Enterprise: Custom. Pooled credits only, no paid user seats; adds SCIM, spend limits, audit logs, IP allowlisting, regional endpoints, higher quotas and priority support with custom terms.

Prices were read from ampcode.com/pricing and the pricing docs; the Individual price is $20 a month, and the page does not say whether annual billing is offered. Invoices go through Stripe and amounts are in US dollars. The Gigawatt price, per-tier usage and the FAQ answers on the pricing page could not be read. Confirm on the live pricing page.

Details checked October 2026 against the vendor's own pages. Prices and limits change, so confirm before you buy. Official pricing page ↗
